"They have made many hockey jersey sacrifices in their lives to protect and defend our state and nation. Wearing the Green Mountain Battle Flag reflects our sincere appreciation and support of all that they do on our behalf."
The University'salumni from the Green Mountain Battalion (also known as ROTC) helped fund this initiative.
"There is a distinct tie between collegiate athletic teams and the Army ROTC; both need scholars, athletes and leaders," said Lieutenant Colonel Michael Palaza, who directs the ROTC program at UVM. "The mental and physical toughness that comes with being part of a collegiate athletic team is the same foundation needed to lead soldiers in combat."
"Our alumni helped fund the initiative for the hockey team, but Dr. Corran expanded the display of the Green Mountain Battle Flag to all UVM varsity sports football jerseys uniforms. His efforts are truly a reflection of how grateful and proud we all are of our citizen soldiers of the Vermont National Guard."
