Purse parties were popular, withknock off purses guests sipping wine while perusing tables of flashy but phony fashion that sold for a fraction of the retail cost.

Most sellers had no criminal record. Many obtained their supply from the Los Angeles garment district; others ordered directly from China.

Vancouver resident Michelle Northcutt was caught unloading $62,000 worth of counterfeit merchandise for a purse party at the Chestnut Tree Inn in Portland in October 2008. "When I moved here, I thought of it as a social way to meet people and a way to make extra money," she told a judge.

Others, such as Georjean M. Bertrand oflouis vuitton handbag Medford and Eldridge L. Osbin of Portland, were caught hawking goods out of their vehicles. Police stopped Bertrand in her white Mercedes-Benz SUV, parked in a Beaverton Fred Meyer lot with her 15-year-old son, who was on spring break. The back of her SUV was filled with more than $30,000 worth of counterfeit handbags, wallets and scarves.
